Where to eat in Dharamkot: A solo traveller’s guide

If you are staying in Dharamkot and looking for the best places to eat in the area, you’re in luck! I spent two weeks in this lovely hill village and have compiled some suggestions of cafes and restaurants in Dharamkot for you. Here are my favourite food joints in Dharamkot:

My favourite places to eat in Dharamkot

Khanabadosh

A cute, quaint café located in a beautiful location near Dharamkot Chowk (just a few steps down from Tushita Meditation centre), this is a great spot for breakfast or even a snack. The menu has both north and south Indian dishes, and I loved the pesarattu that I had here. Their menu features crowd-pleasers like rajma-rice, as well as fun eats here like vada pav, pakoras, dabeli, etc.

Good to know

  • Go here for delicious Indian food and pleasant views
  • They do have free Wifi
  • Closed on Mondays

Salvation Cafe

The café attached to Zostel is the place to hit up when you want a pocket-friendly and delicious meal in a friendly and upbeat atmosphere. I tried just about everything on their menu and would particularly recommend the parathas, sandwiches, masala tea, and the hot chocolate. They also stock yummy cakes and cookies from the Birdhouse Cakery.

Good to know

  • The wifi is good and free
  • People enjoy the relaxed and fun vibe here
  • Open daily, but has a couple of hours of closure in the afternoon
  • Look it up here

Young Monk Cafe

Attached to the hostel with the same name, the café offers sweeping views of Lower Dharamkot and some interesting foodie options. I can recommend the poha and the honey ginger lemon tea here. The menu is quite varied, and they are new, so do try them out.

Good to know

  • It is a good place to work from with good wifi and views

Morgan’s in the Hills

A sister joint of the older Morgan’s Place (also in Dharamkot), this restaurant is close to Salvation Café and has some great views from its upper floor. Come here for delicious pizzas or pasta, dosas, salads and your favourite cocktail. I particularly enjoyed the pesto pasta and the masala dosa at Morgan’s.

Good to know

  • Go to the top floor for awesome views
  • This is one of the few places in Dharamkot that serves alcohol

The Birdhouse Cakery

I would go back to Dharamkot just to have more of their baked goodies! Anukriti creates some seriously amazingly cookies, cakes and pies at this cute little bakery-café near Zostel. You’ll enjoy hanging out here, just remember that it’s a small place with limited seating. If you can, plan a visit on Saturday – that’s when they make pizzas! If you are a coffee-lover, you should try the nutty hazelnut coffee here.

Good to know

  • This place does some outstanding cakes
  • Don’t miss meeting the super cute doggo Oreo
  • They are closed for the day every Tuesday, and also for a short break every day between 2-4 pm.

Bodhi Greens Vegan Cafe

This popular place in Lower Dharamkot serves a superb range of vegan dishes with something for even the pickiest of eaters. Their menu includes smoothies, salads, soups, falafel, sandwiches, dumplings and some great-looking desserts more. I tried the vegan pad thai and enjoyed it. Bodhi Greens regularly organizes musical and literary events at their space as well.

Good to know

  • This cafe has some amazing vegan and organic food
  • They also sell a variety of organic products in the cafe
  • Look it up here

Buddha Delight Cafe

A small family-run café in upper Bhagsu, just a few steps down from Dharamkot, Buddha Delight is a good place for a hearty breakfast or lunch. The food is fresh and tasty, and the service is warm and friendly. It’s a good stop if you’re heading down from Dharamkot towards Bhagsu.

Good to know

  • The food here is delicious and pocket-friendly
  • Taking the steps down from Dharamkot is way easier than the return trip!

Cool Talk Cafe

A quiet little café not far from Dharamkot Studio, this is a good one to visit for breakfast or coffee. The cappuccino was perfect, the sourdough bread was delicious, and the overall vibe of the place was quite pleasant.

Good to know

  • This cafe is open till late
  • It is in a relatively quieter part away from the main group of restaurants of Dharamkot

So, this was my recommended list of places to eat at in Dharamkot. If you wish to go eat further away in Dharamshala or Mcleodganj, then of course the number of options increases further – I’ll write about those another time.
